Borneon Orangutan

In all seriousness, there is a problem with obesity in captive Orang-Utans. How many zoos really work at dealing with it?

True, I think the situation was far worse in the past, (as my photo from 1987 shows), but zoos have been slow to realise, the situation is probably better in Gorillas for some reason, yet Orangs and Chimps still get over-looked a bit even now. Of course Orangs tend to have a slower metabolism/ and are perhaps less active in captivity too which does not help.

I would be surprised if any of Chester's orangs were so obese.

They are not: because of better diets and far more opportunities for climbing, although the Bornean orangs are not as slim or as active as the Sumatrans. To be fair the Bornean orangs at Blackpool have looked nothing like this in recent years.

Jimmy/James was one of the most obese males I've seen. He was somewhat untypical even for that time.

I agree he was the most obese I have seen, his camera pose doesn`t help either! He was not a typical example.
The diets for captive anthropoid apes have certainly improved over the last few years.
