I assume this is part of an exhibit featuring birds of Southwest Australia?
It is strange to me to see the phrase "The Southwest" used to describe something other than the southwest United States. I live in Arizona and the phrase "The Southwest" is commonly used to describe this portion of the country by people all over the USA. Never heard it used for any other country, but of course it makes sense it would be used in other parts of the world.

The exhibit is a fairly large and sparsely populated collection of Southwest endemics from this part of Australia although birds like the banded stilt and a couple of others have a much wider range. The Red-eared Firetail is a true endemic being restricted to a range which starts just south of Perth.

I think West Australia is the only state with actual regions as such, including South west, Pilbara, Wheatbelt, Goldfields-Esperance and Kimberley (and any others). I haven't rally heard of such regions in New South Wales.

So you haven't heard of the Southern Highlands, Northern Rivers, Western Plains, Central Tablelands, Snowy River, Hunter Valley, Orana, Illawarra, Riverina, South Coast or New England regions?
