Wendy the Asian elephant at Bristol Zoo, 28 May 1999

If my memory is correct, the elephants were located where the okapi is now. I believe Wendy was the last of the elephants kept at Bristol.

The indoor house is currently shared, with the okapi on one side and the gorillas on the other side. I can't remember what was located outside where gorilla island is now, so I don't recall what species shared the house with the elephants before the gorillas.

The elephants used to be on the Gorilla island (which was made of concrete), and Giraffes on the Okapi's side. Then, when only Wendy was left, she had the enclosure in the picture built, and the Gorillas had their island built.
If you look at the Gorilla island, outside on the wall by above the climbing frame there are some elephant pictures painted on the wall.

Oh yes, I remember now. Thanks for that. My memory's not as good as it used to be! :)

Is that the gibbon island in the background...I remember seeing something like that on Skins even though it was probably filmed 10 years after this was taken.

No there wasn't a pool. There was a shower in one of the trees though!

There was a pool in wendy's old enclosure, but as she never used it, one wasn't put in the new enclosure. She cold operate the shower on the tree herself as and when she felt like it though and was hosed regularly. Her skin condition was poor in the last few years of her life so she was treated with a human skin lotion (can't remember the name now) which was donated by the producers of it.

I remember reading that, didn't the keepers spray her with litres of the stuff?
