The Bear Terraces at Perth are another one I remember well from my visits as a young boy in the mid to late 70s. Mostly held Brown Bears but sometimes also Black Bears (prob. Asiatic) and for quite a long time 'Cape' Hunting Dogs.

Still held some old Brown Bears in 1987, but probably didn't last much longer after that.

Probably better they didn't last much longer from the look of the lol

Over time they held polars, suns, a kodiak/grizzly cross, Syrian bears, hunting dogs, maned wolves and striped hyaenas. Possibly also a black bear species. The pair in the photo are almost certainly the pair of Hokkaido browns. The hyaenas went to Singapore night safari and only the sun and Syrian bears, hunting dogs and maned wolves were rehoused within the zoo when the exhibit was closed.

Thanks for this info tetrapod - apologies for the very late reply.

I note you are also in England but seem to have a good historical knowledge of Perth Zoo - how come??

Again - apology for a late reply!!! Australian-native, worked at Perth Zoo in the past.

The paradox of liking this photo is I like the Bears in the photo and the historical documenting of time ... definitely nothing to like about that awful prison they lived in. Good news was the the following year the Bears moved to a new exhibit.
