So killing animals for the sheer fun of it with no impact on the balance of nature is less disrespectful to wild animals then sitting near one/holdig one whilst keeping the animal's needs in mind?
You have clearly demonstrated your ignorance here.
Surely one of the great things about zoos is how we can, just for one day, bridge the gap between us and the wild whilst not making a complete mockery of it (ie; drugged tiger cuddles in Thailand). When I was at Longleat a couple of days ago, I was amazed at just how close I got to the animals whilst keeping healthy respect for them; the car driving right past unconcerned animals in the Safari, feeding the sea lion bull buster with fish from the boat, having bats brush past my hair, holding a tarantula: It's these sort of things that have fueled my love for animals and in turn zoos and conservation, things that have fueled my dream to be a keeper and travel the world to see rare species' in their natural habitat. So if a keeper like Kate knows there is a trust between her and her animal and he will accept her near him with an appropiate barrier of both physical safety and respect, surely she can do this to fuel the reason why animals is our field of interest.
In the first half of this paragraph, you say that you do not think she is doing her job wrong, yet later on you are correcting what she is doing and say she is "creating the wrong impression of a wild animal" and that she shouldn't "fuss and pet [it]". Sorry if I misunderstand, but how is this not telling her that she is doing her job wrong?
I dont know how she goes about her daily routine, hopefully not in this manner, this picture was taken with one hand on a phone one on a Lion and her face pressed up against the mesh, she would of stood no chance if anything went wrong.
I will also point out that you train dogs, I would hazard a guess that you "fuss and pet" your animals (which you call "wild" in a previous post) far more than Kate does with Kamal. Not only that, but didn't you also say you won best bitch at Cruft's last year, I think that's flaunting your "degredation" far more than Kate has here .
Yes my domesticated PETS are fussed and petted, dont you have a pet? What is problem with dog showing, lets see now, oh yes, exhibiting animals for public entertainment isnt exhibition is it?
PS. I also value Hix's contributions and do not think that she (always thought you were male :s) believes she owns the site, I would be interested to know where you heard this from.
Dont be so childish, that was an assumption on my part clearly, what do you say? "Deal with it!!"
I don't own the site, or even think I do. Maybe your friends are talking about another site where I used to be a Moderator - my behaviour there was very different to how I behave on this site.
Nope, this site, your posts are often dictatorial and you TELL people that they are wrong, you cannot accept another opinion differs from your and maybe right as far as they are concerned.
In the past year I have politely disagreed with people over issues, and often agreed to disagree. I have made it a point to address the issue, not he person.
Then please start doing so her and stop telling me to "deal with it" just because you dont agree with it, its not very nice to read, and puts you in a particularly unpleasant light, definitely what you say goes, which was what the pm's said.
That changed a couple of days ago when a PETA plant appeared and tried to drum up support for boycotting a zoo. My posts in that thread were less diplomatic.
Mine would of been the same, show me where it is, Ill lend a hand to you! PETA are nothing more than a bunch of ****** who destroy animals not help them, funded by greed and self gratification.
And then this thread started. As I said in a previous post, non-zoo people telling keepers how to do their job is something that really gets my hackles up. So I felt compelled to respond, even though I knew I shouldn't (but it was around 2am and my judgement wasn't too good at that hour).
I have told NOBODY how to do their job, I have said the photo posted is inappropriate to say the least and in my opinion promotes the Zoo in a poor light, when they are all for keeping everything "wild" then showing stuff like that on a public forum.
So whoever gave Dawn B that background (mis)information on me has given her a bum steer.
You are stooping and grasping now Taun, its not pleasant to watch. I said (if you read) what people do behind closed doors is nobodys business but their own, however on a public forum it becomes everyones business and they should consider what impact that has on themselves and their place of work, NOT a good one in this instance!
Am not stooping or grasping, your post don’t always make sense. I find you avoid the real issue as well. You find this sort of photo disrespectful but you think it’s okay if we close the door? Is that what you are saying?

You should be a politician! I am saying, what folk do behind closed doors is up to them, but putting it into a public area will give rise to those who oppose it (or support it) to do so. She should of been mindful of possible repercussions, rather than the "look at me with the big cat" picture, accept that "petting" wild animals is not looked upon as being "cool" by many.

The same could be said of you Dawn B, you are asked a direct question that you obvious seem to think that it may compromise your stance in this debate, so you avoid it by discussing everything around the question.
Zoos do not hold animals soley for the entertainment of the public anymore it is not one of the main priorities in most zoos now - And it is certianly not one of mine.
You clearly seem to know all things there are to know about lions and other cats so there is no point in me staying in this thread anymore.
In a prefect World we would not need zoos to keep these magnificant animals going but we have to. What is their wrong in getting to know an animal your going to work with in most cases their entire life?
And all animals are different DawnB some like human company others dont and i think seeing the evidence in this photo of what in my eyes to be a pretty contented lion seems to me he does. I am going to add a Quote by the late John Aspinall - "There are bold tigers and timid ones, honest tigers and treacherous ones, predictable and unpredictable, noisy and silent, hot tempered and good natured" - All animals are different Kamal seems to be very content in the presense of his friendly keeper KateA but another lion may not be and that is respected by most keepers out there - They know what their animals are like.
Animals need to be protected we have to have them in zoos, the role of zoos have changed.Different Zoo's have diffrent approaches to dealing with animals. We must respect what other zoo's do and other peoples opinion because if we dont respect them and show it how on earth are they going to be able to respect our opinion.
Animals need our help and this is what i intend to do in my life to get to know animals to try and learn more about them i am going to end this post with another John Aspinall Quote "What friends Nature has,Nature needs.
And also if we let these animals die out just because we think it is degrading to house them in zoos then we will loose them all together what a sad sight that would be -
"What would it say about the Human Race,
If we let the Tiger go extinct" -
Ashok Kumar - Vice President of the Wildlife Protection Society of India
- And adding to that any animal.
The zoo animals of today can be the ancestor's of those released back into the wild in the future.
I care about lions as much as you do, be it any animal - Please dont critise what i have to say about these animals I just want to try and save these magnificant animals. They have as much right to be on this Earth as we do. After-all i have known many lions and i know all their personalities too.
Kind Regards,
I hope this to be the last i will post on this thread.
Getting close to animals is not about how cool it is, Its about knowing that animal - to be close to an animal like a lion like that to know it is content around you is a magical feeling.

Like what, make it simple Taun, what do you want answering I cant think Ive avoided anything?
You on the other hand have failed to tell me about the "warning" I have received, please do so. Also tell me why its RIGHT for the picture to be posted and responsible, without the "I cant see a problem with it" crap.

No I certainly dont, but I DO know that you are wrong when you said rubbing is because the Cat LIKED it and was being affectionate, did you see the photos? Still think rubbing has one meaning? Has it now occurred to you that it "could" (not did) mean something else so was irresponsible to say the least?

Of course they are all different, which is EXACTLY why a Lion shouldnt be taken for granted and people assume they know what its thinking.

I have the utmost respect for Zoos and the necessary work they do, but posting photos of myself pressed up against a mesh fence wouldnt be one of them.
