Moti the Asiatic Lion at Bristol Zoo, 1 August 1998

How old is she now? Do you think there's any chance she'll breed like it was hoped she would when the new male arrived?

She's only been coming into estrus about every 60 days rather than 30 so it may be that she is ovulating from only one ovary. We're actually going to knock her out next week and check her out properly to see if we can find any obvious reasons for her not falling pregnant. She is now 14 1/2 as is the male so it is probably the last chance for them to breed now...

Do the Asian lions at Bristol roar regularly? I don't think I've ever heard them do so, whereas I often heard the African Lions in the past.

They certainly do at Chester, Asoka is very vocal.

Yes they do roar quite a bit, mostly in the afternoons from about 3.30pm onwards and throughout the night. They occasionally roar in the mornings, but not so much.

Probably why I've never heard them then, as my infrequent visits nowadays are usually in the middle of the day..
