To be honest, I have no idea. I was only 10 at the time, and obsessed by Hippos, so my only clear memories are of the Pygmy Hippos, sorry.
They had 2 Hippos, I remember that!
I seem to remember that the Pygmy Hippos at Bristol were originally housed in a Green-house style building in the corner near the current Aquarium and Reptile House . This was probably before the Service Building was built . There would still have been Black Rhinos in the current Hippo House .

They were. I think they were old Plant Greenhouses that were converted for the Hippos to live in! Later that disappeared and temporary enclosures for Lions and White Tigers were built there.
Regarding the Giraffes; Bristol normally exhibited just a pair, with sometimes a young one whenever there was a breeding.
