The Giraffes were in this area in 1989 (although not as green), it was then redeveloped for Wendy the Elephant & then again for the Okapi.

I have at least 8 old maps from Bristol Zoo, and on a couple of them there is a symbol of an elephant where the okapi(s) are currently held. How long ago did Bristol Zoo phase out elephants? Was Wendy the final elephant at the zoo?

Wendy was the last elephant at Bristol; she died in September 2002 (had to check that date in the Bristol history book!).

This photo was taken in around 2000 of the current Okapi paddock in its elephant incarnation. For its small area it was quite nicely done, but it was only ever a retirement home for a single elephant.

As stated above, its been revamped several times now. In the future(according to their masterplan) it may hold Bongo- but no idea where the Okapi might go, with no 'National Conservation Park' in sight.
