Inside the Nocturnal House at Bristol Zoo

October 11th 2012
What are some of the highlights of Bristol Zoo's nocturnal house?

I could have missed some, but when we went the following species were on-show in the Nocturnal House:

Yellow mongoose
Arabian sand cat
Leopard gecko
Kowari
Aruba Island rattlesnake
Turkish spiny mouse
Java mouse deer
Pygmy slow loris
Splendid leaf frog
Six-banded armadillo
Linnaeus' two-toed sloth
Aye-aye
Grey mouse lemur
Malagasy giant jumping rat
Grey-legged douracouli
Cave cricket (species?)
Naked mole rat
Blind cave fish (not 100% sure)
House mouse
Brown rat
Black rat
False widow spider

Like I say, could have missed one or two but think that list is pretty much comprehensive.

Cave Cricket (Pholeogryllus geertsi)

Mexican Blind Cave Fish (Astynax fasciatus)

I just spent ages making a list and then saw you had already done it. I wish I'd looked first.

Thanks for your effort guys. It looks like a good nocturnal house. There aren't many of them left on this side of the pond.

Not sure the situation in the rest of Europe, but speaking for the UK then it's much the same over here. We have a lot of zoos that have 'nocturnal sections' - such as a bat cave or single-exhibits in nocturnal setting. However, full nocturnal houses in the truest sense (in my mind) I can only think of Bristol, London and Birmingham Nature Centre.

are the mouse deer actually Javan? Or lesser?

This is one that confuses me - They're listed as lesser Malay mouse-deer (Tragulus javanicus) in Bristol's annual report - zootierliste shows them as T. javanicus [in the broadest sense].
