Inside the Nocturnal House at Bristol Zoo

October 11th 2012
Nocturnal House still in the UK can be found at the follwing collections,Bristol Zoo,Chester Zoo,London Zoo,Paignton Zoo,Newquay Zoo,Shepreth Wildlife Park,Tropical World Leeds,Cotswold Wildlife Park and Amazonia(Scotland),I may have missed a couple that just have Bats!

I was discounting a couple of them - for example I don't see Chester as having a 'Nocturnal House' - to me it's a bat house with a couple of side exhibits. To me, a nocturnal house holds a variety of nocturnal species and doesn't just focus on one type of species. Hope that makes sense, it sort of does in my head :p

It looks like a good nocturnal house.
Just for your information, its an old Ape House which was converted for nocturnal species, using both the public area and the Ape dens as well. Its actually a pretty good conversion and usage for it and a good species collection too. I do have issues with the lighting in there (too dark?) but others disagree.:)

I have to say that I think that the "house at night" area really could be put over to something a bit more exotic. For all that the Aye-Ayes have bred, they aren't massively flattered for space, as a suggestion.

The AyeAyes are the prime example of a species in there that you cannot see properly, they are frequently active but just dark shapes moving about. IMO they need more 'moonlight'.

I saw my first aye-aye silhouette in this nocturnal house. I was with a friend and she couldn't understand why I was so excited about the outline of some obscure animal. Berlin gave much better views.

Here is the lament of the true zoo nerd.

Fortunately we all have each other as a global support group.

The secret is to get to the zoo as soon after 9 am as possible. They don't turn the lights out until 9.30 (or a little later) - so you can see the animals :)

Hi. My name's Pat and I'm the victim of a nocturnal exhibit that was too dark.

And Gentle Lemur I walked from the centre of Bristol (do you know where Arnolfini is?) so 9am would be quite a stretch. :)

Yes, but are the AyeAyes active in the 'daylight' lighting?

IMO it shouldn't be necessary to have to try and see them under those conditions anyway- they should just improve the nocturnal lighting!

Like Pat above, I am another victim of unsatisfactory AyeAye viewing- I think I may need some councilling. First time I saw them was at Jersey though- no problems there.:)
