Kowari

Kowari (Dasycercus byrnei) - Nocturnal House - Bristol Zoo - 11/10/2012.
I'm not sure about kowari in private hands in the uk but all 5 spiny tenrec species are kept privately, I myself have quite a few lesser hedgehog tenrecs and am looking to add common tenrecs and greater hedgehog tenrecs to the collection in the next few years.
Believe one of the Streaked species has died out or now just has a single sex group!

Interesting to hear, do you breed your tenrecs out of interest?

I was looking into getting some last year, but I didn't have the money at the time. Now I'm working and could get funds ready I can't find any for sale :p

Hi yes I do breed them :) if you send me a pm I can add you to next years waiting list.

In regards to one of the streaked species, It may be true that they are now in a single sexed group. Both species of streaked are very hard to keep, requiring very specialised conditions and diet to keep the colony going.

Just for info: there are no private holdings anywhere anymore. These specie became almost extinct in captivity after EEP stopped breeding for two years. Currently there are about 50 in Europe.
Interesting to hear about streaked tanrecs. Which specie do you have (H. nigriceps or H. semispinosus). Moscow Zoo managed both species for a while. The most important thing in nutrition is, only to give them earthworms.

I see Kowaris whenever i visit Perth zoo (every couple of weeks) and have tried very hard for a photo but this is the best captive photo I've seen.
