The Penguin enclosure was where the Pudu are (if still there?). This says 'area next to the Pudu' so I don't think so. I think it was the area behind/further back, with the higher-looking wall at the back. I looked at a couple of postcards I have of the old Penguin enclosure too- the rockwork doesn't look the same as here either.
Looking at it again , I can see a paddock beyond it which I assume is the pudu area . This is probably the section nearest to the old Restaurant building . I think this is where there were breeding pens for water voles a few years ago . I think recently it has been part of the pudu paddock . Were there some macaroni penguins here in the past ?
The former penguin area, which was subsequently grassed over for pudu, is now an aviary. The rear wall is still dark fake rock, each piece has a whitish top that represents snow, but it does not look too out of place (remarkably enough).
As Bele said above, this paddock is next to the old restaurant. It housed the prairie dogs and the pudu were added subsequently. Then the sousliks replaced the marmots. To protect the small mammals from gulls and corvids, a fan of piano wires was stretched across the paddock, but when I couldn't see the sousliks on recent visits I wondered how effective they were. I wonder if the service covers in this photo indicate that essential work of some sort has been required. In which case they may restore it to its previous condition or there may be different plans. This enclosure, with the new wallaby walk-through, the gorilla island and the warty pig paddock are the only grassed enclosures of any size in the zoo.
I saw this area when I visited a week or so a go. The pudu / souslik enclosure is still extant I'm certain. This area is next to the pudus, it's where the water vole were and where there were wire lockers for school parties to leave bags. You can see six paving slabs that are set in concrete, they look like foundations for a portacabin type structure. Can't remember if one stood here or maybe it awaits one.
