Interesting comments, to me its no worse than the Tiger and Bear pits at Dudley.... NOW!!

Yes I agree , though of course they are restricted by the laws of listed buildings and the legacy left by berthold lubetkin! This greatly holds Dudley , and London Zoo to some extent , back from developing into the future with these dated enclosure designs.

So, in the same year as the above photo, this male bear either died or left the collection, before Bonnie and Clyde arrived later in the year to go into the refurbished enclosure?

It sounds like this male was the survivor of the previous pair, possibly the pair you say that bred?

How was it working with Bonnie and Clyde? Did they ever produce cubs? How did you feel about the move to Zagreb zoo?

I disagree about Dudley! (See recent posts and threads relating to this). I think the backs of the Tecton bear and tiger pits are not listed and these enclosures can effectively be extended up through the woods behind them. But I think Dudley is obviously holding out for being able to develop the space at least on the left-hand side for apes at some point, when in fact they could create large enclosures for probably the same budget as the lion exhibit.

It would be better not to keep animals in them though in my opinion, perhaps develop them for other things? A minefield I know, but one can hope.:)

Yes to your first question. The former pair and Bonnie & Clyde both bred but the cubs did not survive from the latter pair and she was put on a contraceptive implant later on.Zagreb Zoo were the only collection that would take them at that time , very sad they left Chessington.

dudleys bear/tiger pits arent as bad as this, they aren't perfect but they done very well with the tigers and to a certain extent with the bears, this is just terrible. But it could of been worse :S

old polar bear

This interesting old photo shows the old female , I think she was called "Bess", who went to Basle Zoo just before the arrival of "Bonnie and Clyde" from Karlruhe in 1982.
