Great Ape exhibit - 1982

There are three enclosures here, one has chimps, one orangs, and the last has gorillas. Water moat at the front.
In the 1960/70's it was thought a good idea to build just such Housing for people some times even worse in multi story blocks. but at least people could complain!

Thankfully times have changed and a new more enlightened age is prevailing.

I believe this was modelled on Dudley's ape house; certainly, they both look very much like enomrous urinals.

Dude i can't stop laughing about them looking like giant urinals. hahahahahahaha but at the same time how many apes were in each exhibit? cause they wouldn't be bad retirement homes for elderly apes.

Each had one pair, and the land area was tiny. Elderly or not, this was an appalling exhibit.

:p

It was a terrible place, so small that I wouldn't have recommended it for any Apes at all, including elderly ones. With the dividing walls knocked down it might have been suitable for a very small group(4/5 max) of Monkeys, that's all. I shudder whenever I see this photo- thankfully this house has long gone now.

All the pairs of apes formed platonic/ brother-sister relationships due to their young ages when they first arrived and thus never bred in those original enclosures.
Worth noting that(afaik) Kumba and Baffia the Gorillas are both still alive and living at Chessington, in the smaller 'retirement group' with two of Kumba's children by other females. Both of them very much look their age now, and considering Kumba suffered two debilitating strokes some years ago I am surprised he's still going strong, if he in fact is. That would make him the 2nd oldest male Gorilla in the UK after Nico at Longleat.

Very sorry Nanook- edited your post instead of quoting- by mistake.:o
