This photo is from the book - The Last Great Wild Beast Show. Jordan and Ormrod. Incidentally the first climbing apparatus used were infact trees! Then these were replaced by metal frames, which were again replaced by a steel ball frame for the Chimps, a metal platform for the Gorillas and the Orangs had the frame in the photo.

Why were the trees taken away? They had actual trees in this hell-hole of a house, and they got replaced with something from a playground!!:eek:
 
No doubt they destroyed the trees/trunks which is why they were replaced with metal. Quite common practise in Apehouses of this period.

I don`t think they were full grown trees, more like some natural branching ? Which were easily and quickly wrecked I am sure.
I do remember seeing a combination of the two with small branches, or "browse" as it is now known, being attached by chain to the metal work.
