Unfortunately, the simple truth is that they wanted to save money, which is what zoo staff cite as the real reason. The environmental stuff is marketing hyperbole they know unwitting visitors will swallow.
I think we both know each other's views on the flowers, but I've a nasty feeling very few zoo visitors are going to enjoy the change.
