Curator of Mammals Tim Rowlands informed us that although occupied the exhibit is not yet quite in its final state - in particular there are several large Gunnera to be planted (love Gunnera!).

Gunnera is giant South American rhubarb (it looks as if it's trying to become a triffid). Big round leaves on long thick stems, the undersides of the leaves are quite spiky.

Thanks for the description. I would probably recognise it if I saw some. I imagine the otters will damage Lily roots until the stage where the Lilies become(hopefully) so well established that the Otters' attentions won't have an impact anymore.

This is the gunnera in the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee Garden (aka the sunken garden) at Chester, adjacent to the giant otter enclosure.

What is Gunnera:confused:?

Incidentally, the largest Gunnera of which I am aware is in a long-abandoned water garden on the estate which now forms the Borders Donkey Sanctuary in St. Boswells. It is huge, very old, and I'm told has not had any frost protection for decades.

Thanks for putting that up. I've seen plenty of that but never knew its name before...;)
