Also, I've heard that you can keep these as a pet! Don't know if it's true, but I know that experianced reptile keepers can keep other monitors without a license.
On a smaller scale, planning on getting a Bearded Dragon when I have the money (got viv, but need lamps, food, species etc.)
Small-to-medium-sized monitors are common in the pet trade, yes. There are several (such as Rough-necked, Varanus rudicollis) that I've seen far more in reptile shops than in zoos.

Ahh right. Don't think I will go in for anything that big just yet . I've heard Bearded Dragons are good for beginners, so I think that is probably what I will end up getting (also, I really like them).
