Padang

Subadult male Sumatran orang. He was separated from the others as he is about to move to the Continent. He seemed a little bored, banging in the wire and spinning rapidly from a strap, hanging on with his feet, head-down. I tried to use my long lens, but he kept coming up to the window to look at it. Realm of the Red Ape, Chester 16th October 2010
I love the expression too - it's the eyes looking shiftily to his left that make me chuckle!

I think you will find they (or some of them) are actually quite nervous creatures. More than once I've seen an Orangutan duck or flinch when a bird flies over, or at a sudden noise.

I read an article by Chester's ape keepers recently where they say father 'Puluh' is actually quite timid. I have various photos of Orangutans that are wearing this 'worried' expression, interestingly they are all of Sumatrans...

I've just realised who he reminds me of.....

he looks like Josh Kirby's drawing of the Librarian out of Terry Pratchetts discworld - not just coz it's an Orang but the face is really similar!

Scanning that quickly, I read 'Orangutan duck or finch' and thought you'd discovered some new species!
Back to the subject, orangutan Mali was watching a peacock that had wandered into Paignton's ape house this week when a pet cat came in. We picked it up and walked towards her with it and she almost did a  before composing herself and 'nonchalently' moving off. And Bulu and her then young daughter were outside once when a duck landed near them. Gambira fled inside while Bulu tried to scare it off with a stick before joining her.
I've noticed that some orangutans will quite happily interact with people while others will look at you without looking at you - a bit like Padang's expression here.

I saw an old photo of an adult male in a European Zoo, and the facial expression was very similar to one of those photos of Osama Bin Laden.

This is the type of concise information that helps make Zoochat such a valuable & efficient instrument for so many of us.
(Sorry, I edited your post by mistake instead of quoting...)
Well, thankyou. Some textbooks describe the Sumatran expression as sometimes being 'quizzical'. If you want to see good examples of this, try and find some old photos or postcard(s) of Frankfurt's original wildcaught male 'Moritz' who was imported there as a fully adult male.(not their current 'Charly') Zurich's female 'Moli.' or the old (1930's) pair Guas and Guarina at Philadelphia.

Such a good looking orang. I've asked before, but does anyone know yet when Padang is moving ? .... would really like to see him before he goes but probably can't get up there for 3-4 weeks.
