This is turning into quite a spectacle reminiscent of Hitchcock's The Birds, especially in winter while the gulls are inland. If you're lucky, at least one heron will arrive too.

That's quite an impressive spectacle and can be seen at other zoos-blackpool springs to mind.

I haven't been to chester for a while and missed the penguins but it looks a very impressive exhbit from here!

For those not familiar, you can see about half the exhibit in this photograph. There is a lot more land to the right where the penguins have nest boxes (and more water, cliffs etc), behind is a crèche for the youngsters and the underwater viewing is over to the left. There's also a large filtration plant which provides salt water, the side of which can seen in the distant right.

It is a spectacle indeed, with the flock flying circuits with a dip to the surface where the fish are thrown, creating a great whirlpool of gulls. A nightmare for anyone with a bit of a phobia for such things, I can't help but be impressed though.

I haven't noticed one for a while around the penguins, I wonder if the competition from this mob has put them off. The penguin/sealion feeding double bill always used to bring them in for sure. (as attached, shot overhead penguins a few years ago)

This penguin exhibit is a very good one; it has that perfect mix of looking natural, having lots of space and allowing spectators a close up view.
