Tuatara

Female, Tropical House, Chester
I didn't know you had Tuatara there..! Awesome..! Make sure you look after them, no one really knows how long they live but most likely 100 years + !!!

A tuatara in full view! That is rather unique in a zoo environment. Are they soooo that visible then? Any indication that they might ever breed (having 1.5)?

Jelle, if you catch them at the right times they are visible, but for the majority they are hidden in burrows. The zoo even challenges visitors to find them!

I don't think they have ever bred at Chester before and I am not sure if they will soon...

I love these since we saw some reintroduced ones in Karori Sanctuary in New Zealand. They were just sitting half out of their burrows.

Anybody know what happened to the ones they had at Jersey many years ago?
