Malayan Giant Squirrel Chester Zoo 10 April 1981

A male Malayan Giant Squirrel (Ratufa bicolor) in the large enclosure at the rear of the small mammal house.

This species bred a few times at London zoo
They had fire-footed squirrels in the same building. I also remember seeing Siamese Black Squirrels.

I do, but I don't know how to upload my slides yet. I'll get round to it one day.

The male arrived in 1974 and was originally thought to be a cream-coloured giant squirrel (Ratufa affinis).

A female arrived in 1978 and she died in 1984. The male was exported in 1988.

I wish more curators would take note of just how appreciated squirrels are , both by zoo enthusiasts and the general public. A key part of any of my zoo visits to those collections privileged enough to keep them.
