Common green birdwing

Common green birdwing (Ornithoptera priamus) - Butterfly Journey - Chester Zoo - 12/02/12
Ooh, that's a bit special. Unusual for birdwings of any kind to turn up in butterfly houses over here (even relatively common (in the wild) species like this) - though after a quick Google I see they are available in the trade from good (reputable) sources (Giant Birdwing Ornithoptera priamus pupa).

Today at least, Chester had two species of birdwing in the butterfly journey. They also had [I counted 3] Golden birdwings (Troides aeacus) - (Photo attached).

Birdwings are a personal favourite of mine not just in butterflies, but out of all inverts. I would love to see Cairn's or Queen Alexandra's, but I think CITES regulations mean that this will never happen [at least in this country's butterfly exhibits].

How long have they kept these butterfiles?

The golden birdwings have been a species in the exhibit for a month or two now. The green birdwing hatched this morning, not sure if they've had any before or if this one is the first.
