Philippine spotted deer

Doe and fawn. We saw this new-born fawn on the ZooChat walk-and-talk with Tim Rowlands. The fawn was not quite dry. He got his walkie-talkie out to pass on the good news. Paddock by Bat Bridge, Chester, 23rd June 2012.

The shocked expression on the face of Tim will stick with me for some time ;)

I wish I had seen Tim's face, but I was concentrating on the fawn, which I was delighted to see. I spotted it while everyone else was looking at the warty pigs (on the other side of the bridge) - so I didn't hear a word of Tim's comments about them ;).

The fence posts are now removed until further notice, allowing deer and fawn to access the thicket of trees between the off-show rhino paddock and their own. This effectively makes the fawn impossible to see, although the female did bring it back out into the paddock while the zoo was closed.

I'll bet the fawn crept in there originally to conceal itself in the thicker vegetation. I've heard of newborn fallow deer fawns doing that- being found in the longer grass outside a paddock after they'd crept under/through the fence.

Please let us know if they sex the fawn- female hopefully...:)

I'm sure that's so - but I was rather surprised as the deer have been in that paddock for quite a few years. In most places there is wire mesh behind the timber posts, but the fawn found a spot where there was none. The keepers were checking for other weak spots after they opened the gap.
