What is the relationship between the royal family and the UK zoo establishment, if any?

Do they visit zoos with some frequency? Do they do any fund-raising for zoos?

There is no official relationship.

Prince Philip has visited Chester previously in 1972, and was at Edinburgh last year.

Princess Anne is the Patron of Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust, and is the most regular zoo visitor in the Royal Family.

The Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, became President of the Zoological Society of London in 1960, a position he held for the next seventeen years.

London Zoo has received quite a lot of animals in the past courtesy of diplomatic gifts from other countries to the royal family

She also has been to Marwell and opened various exhibits. I remember a story about them naming a train after her but just before it was opened her official title was changed to 'Princess Royal' and they had to change it. (or something like that).

The British Pathé website has various interesting clips of members of the Royal Family at London Zoo.

And don't forget the Snowdon aviary designed by Antony Armstrong-Jones, 1st Earl of Snowdon (husband of Princess Margaret, the present Queen's sister), Cedric Price and Frank Newby, and built in 1964.

This one is particularly interesting and features a walrus in the Casson

That's a good point, it's easy to forget that most people on ZooChat do not know Chester.

HM The Queen also opened the web of life display at London zoo a few years ago, HRH The Duchess of Kent has visited Chester, HRH The Princess Royal has connections with Edinburgh and opened their Penguin exhibit, I believe she has also visited Paignton zoo as well as being a frequent visitor to Jersey Zoo as patron
The late Princess Margaret the Queens sister visited Windsor safari park many years ago, and named the then steam train ride. The late King George V and Queen Mary visited London zoo's aquarium at least once in the 1920/30's

I think if you get a royal visit it means the zoo is widely recognized as a centre of excellence.
