Indoor Hippo area at Chester Zoo; 14.02.89

This was at the end of the original Pachyderm House, past the elephant stalls. When the Elephant House was re-modelled with separate accommodation for the bull elephant, this was in the area that had been for the hippos. They had a small pool near the public end of the area.
The next time I visited the Zoo, around 1993, I think, the hippos were gone but a sign stated that the Zoo were acquiring a pair of Pygmy Hippos.

Hey Bwassa, do you have any photos of the Tapir indoor enclosure that would eventually become the hornbill aviary?

I do, I just have to find them. It was two seperate pens with a low wall at the front. I think the tapir area was at a lower level than the public pathway.

What was the outside hippo area like? its a shame that they went, wonder when chester will get hippos or pygmy hippos .

Camel Leopard search the Chester gallery for hippo and you'll see three pictures of the outside enclosure.

M
