Chester Zoo Memories . Bear Pits.

Chester Zoo Memories
I'm sure many ZooChat members search this site in the hope of finding old photos of Chester Zoo. Pictures which bring on a feeling of warm nostalgia. Species no longer kept, lost enclosures, lost corridors. I thought it might be nice if members added them with the title 'Chester Zoo Memories' to make searching easier... What do you think? I'll be adding more Memories over time. As a child, this was one of my favorite enclosures at Chester Zoo. The old bear pit, originally built in the 1940s had two enclosures a concrete pool for Polar bears. Later drained of water and used to house brown bears, and a rather muddy mound with small pool housing Himalayan Bears. This enclosure was alongside the Sealion pool (Giant Otter Pool). Demolished in 1979 to make way for the ‘South American Garden’ This rather uninspiring garden had South American plants eg potatoes and was apparently when viewed from space in the shape of South America!

I remember them. For some reason I particularly remember seeing jackdaws perched on top of the back wall. This shot was taken from the side; on the full size version you can see the top of the fence around the sea lion pool, behind the spectators on the right.

Love the old shots - keep them coming :)

SMR once pointed out to me that you can still trace the line of the old Bear pit in the floor opposite the Giant Otters now - there is a wibbly wobbly line of concrete in the path that marks the perimeter! Have a look next time you are there!
