I rarely go to this part of the zoo (just west of Oakfield House) but I don't recall seeing this plaque before. Was there a different one previously? It certainly deserves to be in this Gallery. Chester, 26th February 2014.

How different might Chester's story have been without World War One, whose centenary we mark this year?
The impact on Mottershead of his injury must have been considerable. I don't think that even the zoo bears as much testament to the man's strength of character as the fact that he managed to overcome a bullet in his back that kept him confined to a wheelchair for several years (does anybody know how long?)
He must have been a man of absolutely cast iron will...

Thank you. It may have been spruced up a bit or perhaps the shrubs nearby have been pruned or I may have just had my brain switched off as I walked past it
The garden was tidied up last year, and the memorial looks as sif it has been cleaned. A lot of the shrubbery was cut back and new planting was being undertaken last June.
Aha! That explains things, thank you.
I did do a Search in the Chester Gallery to see if there were any other photos there before posting mine.
It's good to see that Mr Mottershead's memory is still cherished at the zoo and, as I said before, it's well worth having a few photos in our Gallery too.
