Current map at Chester Zoo, 14/04/14

Out of curiosity why does the Jaguar Coffee House have a viewing window in it?

Have they trained non-human primates to serve coffee or is there some other kind of exhibit in there?

Has the Chester Zoo ever had gorillas? That is an interesting omission for one of the UK's major zoos.

I didn't go into the Jaguar Coffee house yesterday however, I believe the viewing window looks into one of the Jaguar outdoor exhibits. From memory, there was also a separate exhibit for Southern Pudu which can be seen from the viewing window.

Chester has held Gorilla in the past - I believe the last specimen was a male was a male Eastern Lowland who lived where the Rhinoceros and Great Indian Hornbill aviaries are (Which is in the Tropical Realm) and the outdoor enclosure was where the Red River Hog paddock now is.

It is just some small viewing windows into the Pudu exhibit, although you can see right through the exhibit into the first Jaguar outdoor exhibit on the other side.

Its the pelican exhibit - just netted, and with a few new birds (red-billed pintail, comb duck, white-backed duck, cape teal...) not really a new exhibit ! !

Is the wetland bird aviary new?

The Wetland bird aviary (number 31 on the map) is the former red-crowned crane aviary, which has been subdivided around a large central hut. Only the front section is visible from the path. It is used for rearing waterfowl. As Nisha wrote, it was completed last year.
The African Wetland aviary (number 16) is the old pelican pool, which was netted several years ago. Its most conspicuous inhabitants, apart from the pelicans, is a full woodwind section of white-faced whistling ducks.

Chester has held two species of gorilla in the past.

Western Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) 1964-1986
Eastern Lowland Gorilla (Gorilla berengei graueri) 1960-1985

They have not bred at Chester, great excitement occurred in 1969 when eastern lowland gorilla Noelle was thought to be pregnant, it was a phantom pregnancy.

The eastern lowland gorillas were originally thought to be mountain gorillas.

For a zoo which considers itself the best in the U.K. the map is appalling. And still no guidebook.

Terrible cartoon map

Bongorob.
I agree, I feel sorry for anyone relying on that awful cartoon to find their way round. I'd be willing to bet that a fresh version of the illustration that appeared in the 'Chester Zoo News and Guide' books up to 1980 would be very well received by visitors.
As an aside, the zoo still looks upside down to me, bring back elephants at the top and the South Entrance at the bottom!
