New style direction signs

Beside the Monkey House monorail station. I quite like these, they are clear and fairly stylish and a lot less infantile than some of the recent signage. Chester, July 26th 2014.

Perhaps, but they don't exactly say "world-leading, science-based conservation organisation" to me....

A direction sign saying that would be fat lot of use. Particularly to visitors whose first language is not English - Chester gets Welsh-speaking visitors all year round and plenty from Europe at this time of year.

Perhaps you missed my point. It's the overall brand of the zoo, expressed in many ways--including directional signage--that visitors will leave with. This signage, and more egregiously the kiddie-scrawl "typeface" used on the map, website etc., implicitly conveys "fun fair" much more than "conservation organization." Not that it needs to be dull and academic--but could we just ask for tasteful?

No, I think you missed mine.
In previous posts, many of us have been very critical of the current zoo map and the house font of the zoo's publications. These signs use the same graphics, but with a simplified colour scheme and a clearer font. That is progress and to be commended - tastes differ of course, but I do not think these are objectionable.
The size and clarity of these new signs are also welcome. Chester Zoo covers 110 acres with winding paths, a canal and many mature trees, so visitors do get lost. More, bigger, clearer signs can only help.

I guess your idea of "stylish" and mine are rather far apart. Clear and effective directional signage is certainly a plus in a big, complex zoo. But I remain convinced that this sort of hand-made quality detracts from what Chester Zoo is and would like to be acknowleded for.

Viva la differance...
