its amazing that even in 1994(not that long ago) Chester's orangutans were still being treated almost as 'ground dwellers'- there is nothing but flat grass in the part of the enclosure we can see here. Indoors they did have the simple climbing frames of course.

There was a similar climbing frame on the island as well as a few dead trees. It's nowhere near the standard of RORA (obviously), but I feel these islands offered more climbing oppurtunities than Twycross' from the same era (for comparison)
But i do agree, it wasn't particularly suited to Orangs

Twycross had the three big dead trees in their enclosure(I think they are still there but now with interconnecting ropes and hoses etc) but they weren't interlinked in the past.
Going back a long way I was always rather surprised at how Chester failed to give their Orangutans 'real' climbing equipment apart from those simple climbing frames and the odd dead tree. Most other zoos didn't do any better but somehow I expected Chester to do so. Still, they achieved it with ROTRA...
The think is, the old house was so much better for viewing, and I honestly don't like RORA, because of the paths, the huge crowds around every window which often prevents you from seeing anything, and that you can't see anything outside. I honestly liked the old island, where they were always out.
Go to RoRA as early as possible, most people are in the east zoo area looking at elephants, monkeys, bats. I've been in RoRA about 10.30 and had the place to myself.

RoRA is much better for the inmates than the old house, does this not count? or do you still think we should dress the great apes up and make them have tea parties for us?
Yes if you go at the wrong time of the day RoRA is terrible for viewing, but I don't think chester realised how busy it would get in there, the whole design was leading to the public slowly moving thru and therefore no blockages. However they forget that avervage Joe will just hog the windows.
RoRA is much more natural for the Orangs and therefore a lot better than the old house.
