river hippo. western plains zoo, for many years, was the best place to see this species in Australia. however, Victoria's Weribee Zoo opened the Kuba River Hippo habitat, creating what is regarded as Australia's premier display for this species. Hippo can be found at Adelaide Zoo, Cairns Zoo in QLD, Weribee and WPZ, though only the last 3 institutions have viable breeding groups. Seaworld on the Gold Coast has proposed keeping hippo in the future, though the relative availability of this species in the region due to quarantine may hinder such plans.

You were lucky to see it moving out of the water. I have seen Werribees 6 times and 5 times they were in the water and the other time they were asleep on the benk. So I have never seen one out of the water

the hippos get fed alot of times during the day out of the water, so that certainly helps. there is a feeding pad, a concreted bank area where the old barn used to be, as well as this grassed paddock. both give good views of the animals

The Western Plains hippo exhibit is absolutely enormous in size. Does anyone know how many acres or hectares it is? Also, how large are the 3 Werribee hippo habitats? The ones at Werribee appear to be more visitor friendly than the hippo enclosure at TWPZ.
