I wouldn't criticise Alan's photographic skills for all the tea in China, but his images do have an under-saturated style in contrast to the over-saturated norm these days, which in this instance may be contributing to the impression of "stark" and lighter shades of grey.
Thank you SMR, I do choose lower contrast and higher key than most. My impression of this enclosure was that it was relatively dark, perhaps because cloud cover was increasing as we went around: I may have overcompensated a little to show the shadow detail, particularly on some monitors. You can't always get everything in the same shot; I primarily wanted to show the size, shape and furnishings of the enclosure.
Next time I will try to capture the full glory of the fake rockwork to convince someone that it is not as bad as (s)he surmises. Incidentally, according to the planning statement, the basic colour for the rockwork in the Monsoon Forest is RAL 6006 (grey olive), teamed with RAL 6003 (olive green) and RAL 6013 (reed green) which are also used for rendering - although I don't know for sure that these plans were followed exactly.
Alan has returned, despite previous antithetic declaration! (S)he will be delighted to be persuaded of the realistic glorious charmingness of 50 shades of grey mockrock.

A remark which shows how carelessly you read my previous comments.
After my visit to Chester yesterday, I have some nice photos of the rockwork and the macaques disporting themselves on it. However I will not post them until I have been able to calibrate my best monitor and to process them properly. And I think I'll do my photos of the baby elephant first
