Islands problem areas - the space for the tapirs

The Monsoon Forest and Hornbill aviary are on the left and the Tiger enclosure is on the right. the space for the tapir stable and paddocks has been graded and seeded with grass. Hopefully work will start there this winter.
I presume the path behind the grass will open when the tigers and orangs are moved. The brown object in the centre is a skip from Alan's Skip Hire - a company with which I have no connection. Islands, Chester, 27th August 2015
This has the potential to be the highlight of the boat trip, will there be indoor viewing of the tapirs and while we are about it, do any of the hoofstock stabling have indoor viewing at all?

No indoor viewing on the tapir plans or for any species except those in the Monsoon Forest.

I've mentioned on a previous post, I really hope they amend the tapir plans to include indoor viewing. They spend so much time indoors, and are currently on view inside and out, that I think it would be a shame if they only have outdoor viewing because they won't be seen as well. There is also an outdoor hornbill aviary on the plans for this area, so lets see if that makes the final cut too?

I am not aware of any collection that has ever bred Malayan Tapirs, when the Tapirs have not had an area they could stay away from any people. In fact the best breeding pair in Europe at Belfast Zoo very rarely come out of their House and small hard standing yard just outside the house, neither of which can be seen by the public!

Edinburgh have done rather well ;)

Will they have any deep water for swimming as they are almost as aquatic as hippos?

Yes, the river is quite deep and I seem to remember from the plans the area of water they have is quite large. There is also a large pool with underwater viewing planned for another area in their exhibit (opposite the tiger underwater viewing) which I think will be pretty spectacular.

This gets better and better :D

I just hope they use it. Their current exhibit has about 3 inches of water in a small shallow pool. They do like to splash and bath in it, so hopefully they will not be phased by a larger deeper pool. The banteng have a huge wallow pool but I'm lead to believe none have entered into it just yet... Perhaps they are not used to having this option and so have steered clear? Not sure in which collections the banteng were previously kept and whether they are used to large wallow pools?

Along with the non existent Tapir enclosure, you also have the area set aside for the second tiger enclosure, so quite a large area to walk through without much to see, the original plans also have a hornbill exhibit just past the tiger water window.
