Tuan

Bornean orang utan, adult male, father of the two new infants, old island, Realm of the Red Ape, Chester, 13th June 2009.
This is only the second time I have seen Tuan. A correspondent in Belgium tells me that when he was at Antwerp there was no outdoor section of his enclosure, which may explain why he rarely comes outside at Chester.

Did you take this picture around 4pm on Saturday, I think i may have saw you with your back to the chimp enclosure

I wonder why they aren't giving Tuan access to the other netted enclosure - the females seem to occupy the one closest to the entrance, yet the one closest to the exit remains empty. Perhaps they are saving it in case the females need splitting up?

I wondered about this too, perhaps there is no access from Tuan's enclosure to that netted one (except through the one where the females are).

That would definately explain it. It sometimes takes Orangs and Gorillas months to adjust to new experiences in enclosures- such as outdoors, open sky or even grass or climbing eqipment if they are not used to it. This would be the logical reason for his retiring nature. He may get over it with time.

Think of the indoors of the old House(which I guess is unchanged). If Tuan is living seperately in the enclosure nearest the old island, they can't run him through the other indoors or past the females with the new infants without him going in with them directly (too risky to even contemplate). My guess that is why he doesn't have access to any of the netted enclosures at present.

Many thanks for the great shot - I really want to see this big fella as I never got to see Sibu. I love the mature male orangs. It's such a shame that he is rarely on view as he is magnificent.

You mention father of 'two' new infants - have I missed something as I only know about Iznee?? Another baby would be great news and if Martha is expecting too that would be even better!

Leia gave birth recently but I believe it is unsexed and unnamed at the moment
