Tuan

Bornean orang utan, adult male, father of the two new infants, old island, Realm of the Red Ape, Chester, 13th June 2009.
This is only the second time I have seen Tuan. A correspondent in Belgium tells me that when he was at Antwerp there was no outdoor section of his enclosure, which may explain why he rarely comes outside at Chester.

Tuan was on show today. He was in the netted enclosure in front of the entrance to RotRA. He stayed on the ground for much of the time that I watched him, and did not really show well, but it was a hot day and none of the Borneans were particularly active except for Iznee who did a bit of climbing outside.

That's good news, reckon this means he'll be on show more, or has he always had access to the indoor netted enclosure?

I think you have misunderstood. The two netted enclosures in RotRA are outdoor enclosures, which are next to each other. One is viewed through windows next to the visitor's entrance; the other through windows next to the exit. Yesterday was the first time that I have seen Tuan in either of these enclosures since I took this photo of him with Sarikei in 2008 (which was around the time Iznee was conceived, and the first time I ever saw him - see the first post in this thread)

This enclosure is accessible from the old Ape House, and I presume that Tuan has access to the off-show indoor enclosure and sleeping dens there. This netted enclosure was used by all the other Borneans before the Sumatran orangs were moved to the Monsoon Forest.

I'm presuming the Sumatrans' move means they now have space to give Tuan a display enclosure of his own and the females and young have the old Sumatran areas?

The other Borneans are much more visible now they have moved into the Sumatran's vacated premises. Hopefully they can do something nice for Tuan.

I am quite late to this conversation, but if anyone knows if Tuan is still alive, I would appreciate you for letting me know. Tuan's son, named Vandu (flanged male Bornean orangutan), is residing at the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. I just saw him doing well there in the new year. I am wondering if anyone knows whether Tuan is still at Chester Zoo today. There is not much information available about him and Astrid, mother of Vandu, who seems to be kept at Osnabrück Zoo in Germany, if I'm not wrong.

I wasn't able to post images of Vandu here directly, so I have attached the link instead.
