Dama wallaby 1973

Notamacropus eugenii, adult female, Chester, 5th June 1983. Scanned from a Kodachrome slide.
My slide label says 'Wallaby Pit', which I think means the circular enclosure by the current staff entrance, which originally held sun bears. If I'm wrong, bongorob will correct me.

That's correct. Wallaby in the circular side, kangaroos in the other.

Sorry I'm not bongorob. ;)

Thank you. It's nice to have my vague memory confirmed. I have been trying to scan an old photo of one of the sun bears in that enclosure, but I haven't managed to control the contrast. I also have more recent photos in the Gallery of yellow mongoose and giant anteater there, but I don't think I ever got a decent one of the bush dogs when they were there.

In an ideal world, every zoo in ZooChat would have its own bongorob: but until that day dawns Chester does not need two. So there's no need to apologise :)

I also remember Agile Wallabies in there, a keeper told me that they certainly lived up to their name.

In the 1970s bear cubs were sometime shoused in the round pit. I never took much notice and it was a big mistake, they were Kamchatka x Syrian bear cubs.
