Giraffes - Jan 2004

Sometimes I feel as if open range zoos are the future of animals in captivity, and if one compares this enclosure to just about any urban zoo's giraffe paddock then there is no debate over size issues. Size isn't everything, but it carries a lot of weight when it comes to free-ranging hoofstock.

at werribee zoo you can fit 3 melbourne zoos in the lower savannah. it houses white rhinos, giraffe, zebra and eland

to put it simply - i think open range zoos should exclusively display all grasslands species (and i place elephants in that category) and urban zoos exclusively all forest species.

that way there is nothing at the urban zoo bigger than a tapir and thanks to there being no elephants and giraffes - that tapir gets a generous amount of space.

also if you make me choose between elephants, rhino and giraffe or gorilla, manatee and jaguars i choose both. what i mean by that is - both zoos types have a lot to offer, so i visit both knowing that i'll have very different experiences at either.

I appreciate what you're saying but I think you'll find that in many urban zoos, without the elephants and giraffes to pull in the public, management will try to cram as many different exhibits into the available space as possible (or add an amusement park, or other money-milking enterprises). And this will encroach upon the tapir's "generous amount of space".

:p

Hello, Im New lol

I do love the idea of free range hoofstock and enclosures the size of zoo's lol

but i think any zoo that can help in conservation should do whats needed, whether you have rothschild giraffes in a half an acre enclosure or even a 5 acre enclosure aslong as the animals are treated well and have space to live properly zoo's should do whats needed to help

I Meen Shaldon Zoo Has There Ruffed Lemurs In A Shed And A Large Avairy, Chester Zoo Has A Whole Islands, But If Both Zoo's breed The Species Then Does It Matter

i think it only matters if the animals needs are not met. and i agree with you about the space thing its great to see large enclosures for hoofstock . but space isnt every thing especially for monkeys its how well the space is used not nessasarily the amount.
