This is very new - good to see Colchester is providing more of this sort of info about its family groups

adding the sex of the offspring would be helpful- I can't tell from just the names.

I think that the names of each animal are written in a colour for their gender- blue for the males and pink for females.;)

That's what I thought too ! They've done the same with the chimp family tree.

Oh right, yes, I get it!.:o How cute!(but easy for kiddies I guess)

Do you know where the adults came from and how many are in the group now(i.e. any born recently?)

Also, do you know if the male 'Junior' is one of the first three males they had in the old bear exhibit, or a different male.

My daughter has just adopted Junior for Christmas - though she doesn't know it yet !! (but he was on her wish list).

In the gumpf they sent about the group, Colchester states that Junior, Mena and Sereba all arrived in 2003 from Stuttgart ...... the 4 other members of the group were all born at Colchester.

As per the family tree, there are 7 geladas altogether. The most recent birth was the female Mena, in July 2008.

There are 7 or 8 at the moment. Sereba did give birth, but sadly the offspring died and she continued to hold it. Keepers left her to come to terms with her loss. She eventually let go of the baby a week later.
