Look closely in the back left and you can see the back of the only Spotted Hyaena in the UK, which alternates with the Striped in the main paddock.

Who designs the mock-rock at the Colchester Zoo? Fred Flintsone and Barney Rubble?:) From the mangabey mansion, to the orangutan "forest", to the Cuban crocodile conundrum to this slice of "hyena heaven" there are poor examples of mock-rock everywhere. Some designers have got the knack of recreating fake rock so that it is a brilliant addition to a particular zoo, but at Colchester the results are abysmal. It looks so fake that it's not foolin' anyone.;)

Prepare yourself for a shock... I agree with every word of this. :)

Colchester has a peculiar obsession with this really unpleasant fake rock.

I don't know who they employ to design the fake rock, but I can see you getting the job of giving their new exhibits names, "Hyena Heaven" - very Colchester!

What I don't get is how it's difficult to get ahold of real rock

They sell it in most big hardware stores (admitedly not in such massive slabs, but still) so it can't be that hard or expensive for a zoo like Colchester to get some.

What I don't get is why people care when it's merely a hide for the animals? They'd all complain if it was made of wood like Howlett's tiger hides are:confused:

The problem with that is (and this is really why Colchester's rockwork looks so strange) that Colchester doesn't use fake rock to replace rock, in most instances. It used it for things real rock could NEVER do. Such as form a neat cave standing up in the middle of a field. Or making neat trackways in the mangabey enclosure. Or coating walls here, there and everywhere. They don't use it as if it were rock, which is why it looks so bad.

I, for one, would much rather a wooden structure than this! :p

The fake rock work is just 1 of many reason`s why I will never be a fan of Colchester, which is a pity because it has a great collection of animals which to me are spoilt by the zoo its self!
