Colchester Zoo 2003 - Red River Hog exhibit

I visited three UK zoos with some British zoo friends following my USA visit: Chester, Twycross and Colchester. Regrettably it was my first time with a digital camera; both cards were full of photos from the USA and I was only able to take few photos in the UK. I still need to do a proper UK zoo tour.

Red River Hog exhibit.
Is the front part of the exhibit concreted?

Yes it is. This is obviously because they don't want the area nearest the visitor walkway to turn into a trampled morass of mud by the hogs rooting it over. However, I think being a churned up muddy area would be far more natural than this concrete hardstanding area. The nearby Warthog enclosure is much larger without concreted areas, and is consequently(IMO) more effective.

It may actually be larger than this photograph sugests it is.

No, I've seen it and I'd say this is an accurate representation. Photos often make enclosures look bigger rather than smaller.

I think the group has grown more successfully than they had planned for, that's all.
