Wow - that is $47.74 in US dollars - ouch! That is higher than San Diego or any other zoo in America (except for theme parks like Busch and Disney). What is so spectacular that it justifies these kind of prices?

Australian zoos have outrageous admission fees, with Australia Zoo (barely any exotics) about $50 per adult, TWPZ in this photo at about the same price, Taronga insanely expensive, and many small establishments that cost double what they are worth. However, the minimum wage is much higher in Australia and I suppose that everything is relative in that regard.
The good news is that the Friends of the Zoo pass includes the 3 Melbourne locations (zoo, Healesville and Werribee) as well as several other facilities farther afield.

And that children are free on weekends and school holidays. The Victorian Government pumps a lot of money into museums and what not.
I really can't understand why Western Plains costs similar to Taronga Zoo because I always assumed that the price of the Sydney Zoo was marked up for the insane number of tourists that come through the gates regardless. I've only been to Western Plains Zoo twice and the most recent time was because my family had a behind the scenes experience, which included entry, a few years ago. I'd hate to imagining taking a big family here.
