Long-tailed tamandua

The keeper had woken it up to give its claws a clean. This was the first time I had ever seen the tamandua.

I've never seen a photo of a long-tailed tamandua before, its interesting that they lack the markings of the southern subspecies.

Yes - there's a very clear difference. When I was last at Amazon World (IOW) they had a longicauda and a kriegi-type in adjacent exhibits, which made for a very interesting comparison.

There seems to be is a lot of variation between different sub-species , a recent photo from a zoo in Peru in the Gallery shows a totally dark specimen which I have not seen before .

From what I understand, Southern Tamanduas from the northern and western areas of their range are not usually 'vested', and normally just a block colour (pale, dark, black...).
The ones which do have clear 'vests' are usually from the Southeastern areas of their range. I don't think the 'Long-tailed' tamandua is still a valid subspecies, but it's still interesting to see the variation within the single species.

Here's the link to the photo from Huachipa Zoo in Peru which Bele mentioned:

Does anyone know a good site for descriptions of Tamandua tetradactyla subspecies?
