Oranutan

Obviously meant Orangutan! From my 1970s brochure.

These series of old Colchester photos are very interesting Goretex. This picture kind of puts Orangutan forest into perspective !

I wonder if any of the older, or longer term, visitors to Colchester know who this was, and what became of him ? Also, where this enclosure was ?

Thanks for posting the older photos of Colchester Zoo, we'd love to see more.

This enclosure was the site of the last one, the house at the back of the photo still exists. The storks are held here for now.

Can you remember this very Orangutan what his name is? Or can someone else say the name of him? For I'd love to know!

Colchester's original Orangutans were three of the Bornean (sub)species- Guy, Chrissie and Lola. Lola went to Chester and she didn't look like this. So it could be one of the other two-I can't remember when they died. OR it could be the Sumatran male 'Adam' who came from Flamingo Park and later went to Bristol. If it was a colour pic I could tell but more difficult in b/w. It does look rather like him though.

I think this photo is earlier than the Rajang/Annie era, so more likely its one of the above.

Alternatively it might just be the hybrid female 'Annie' who came from America as a mate for 'Rajang' but I think this photo is earlier than that era, so more likely its one of the above.

Also the brochure is in colour it was photocoppied in the libary 5 years ago in Colchester for me to take home. Also sorry about my annoying tick in the bottom of the photo.

Not that I can post( only a couple of very bad ones) Now I'm thinking this is Adam or David but I can't tell which because its b/w.

Got a colour version at the libary on thursday any ideas now who this orang here is?

I am pretty sure now that this is not 'Adam' the Sumatran male as its too dark and it looks like a Bornean subadult male.

So I would say more likely its either 'Guy' or 'David' but it would depend when it was taken in relation to when 'Guy' died and 'David' arrived.

Is the house at the back the same indoor area as Rajang/Djambi/Annie lived in?
