IMO it is one of the poorest ways of displaying Giraffes, which always look far more impressive when seen from ground level. But Colchester do seem to specialise in ugly displays though they have an excellent and obviously well-cared for animal collection .

I agree with this, Paigntons elephant and giraffe set up is similar and I always find it odd not being on the same level as them. As you say, it takes away from the visitor experience.
sadly I agree Pertinax, I remember when the lemur bridge opened and you walked with great difficulty over a giant tight cargo net OVER the lemurs, animals that should be looked up at ended up being looked down upon,I thought it very odd.
Mind you how often do you see an animal which the accompanying signage states comes from a tropical forest or any forest/ wood, only for it to be out in an open grass paddock, Okapi and red river hogs spring to mind here.
