Seemed even more widespread than usual this year. Still, it's easy publicity, so you can see why they do it. YWP got itself back on BBC Look North for only, oh, the three-hundred-and-twenty-seventh time.

I am always surprised how this old 'news chesnut' (the annual zoo stocktake) still gets brought up every year with unfailing regularity, even making the national bulletins(well ZSL does). It also makes me wonder what other news stories on subjects I don't know about, also get recycled in this fashion!
In my book, Jim Naughtie talking to Miranda Stevenson (of BIAZA) about the reasons behind these counts on the Today programme on Radio 4 showed greatly improved coverage (see thread in TV forum).
I did a bit of research into which zoos have managed to avoid placing the dreaded stocktake on their websites this year, concentrating on the bigger zoos. Surprisingly, Colchester didnt have it on theirs! Other gold stars (as far as i could see) to Edinburgh, Marwell, Cotswold, Blackpool & S Lakes- but since they're still advertising santa attractions they don't count! Shame on ZSL(twice), Chester, Paignton, Bristol, Twycross, Dudley & Belfast & the Aspinalls amongst others!
I see no harm in the story, it may not interest us too much but the general public have short memories with such things - seeing their local zoo on the news may make them think 'oh, we should go there soon, it's ages since we last went.'
In my opinion, it is easy publicity and I don't even know why we moan, it's not like it affects us negatively in any way
