Unless you've got good eyesight and know exactly where to look, the Black-backed Jackals can only be seen from the Road Train.

That's right.

Despite multiple visits, I'd always resisted pleas from my daughter to go the road train (queues, gimmicky) but was persuaded on a quiet day and was actually pleasantly surprised when I saw these - I had no idea at all they were there.

Not for any particular reason as far as I'm aware; that's just where they chose to put them. The road train runs on separate pathways to the footpaths, meaning this exhibit has no foot access.

I think that is very bad planning, to have some exhibits viewable only from the little train. Anyone who wants to look at the Jackals (an unusual species in zoos now) quietly or study them for a little time, cannot do so. Very bad layout design.:(

Agree entirely.

I went to colchester last month, and outside the restaurant next to the lake and otters and aardvark i got a good view of the jackals. I saw at least 2 of them actively running about and was able to get a few photos of them but they were moving quick. You can see them relatively easy from the restaurant, but yes Jackal viewing is limited mainly to the train
