The recently arrived maneless zebra were confined to the hardstand and could only be seen easily by looking down on them from the balcony outside the ?Kingdom of the Wild? cafe.

Whilst obviously closely related to Grant’s zebra this form is now often considered a separate sub-species Equus quagga borensis.

(Reference: "Ungulate Taxonomy" (Groves & Grubb; 2011))

It is interesting that according to Colchester Zoo’s labels the scientific name of these maneless zebras is Equus burchelli boehmi - that of Grant’s zebra - (although, of course, that should really be Equus quagga boehmi).
