This construction appears to have taken an inordinate time. Does anybody have any idea why this is so? Has it just been because the zoo has been attempting to do things as inexpensively as possible?
It could be expense SM but it could also be the logistics, Colchester is a pretty tightly packed zoo and doesn't have a lot of open areas that could be utilised for access etc so things may have been delayed because of that.
Other posts have mentioned barred enclosures for apes Sneeuwpanter as opposed to open exhibits but at least this sort of enclosure gives a lot more climbing area for the inhabitants. My main worry is that the chimps just won't use it.as i have said before I have never seen them leave the indoor area.
I just commented on the picture and haven't read other post, but chimps are only partly arboreal so in an open layout with climbing oportunities they would do fine. I would agree for completly arboreal species bars and fences would provide more climbing oportunities.
Colchester are not the quickest when it comes to building major exhibits! The Sun Bear one took at least 2 years & I think the Orang one must have been close to that timing too!
