In the 1970s, prior to the opening of the Chimp Park, these cages housed - and bred - more than a dozen chimps as well as the orangs.

Gee that brings back memories. have you got photos of the lod pygmy hippo pools that were just down from these cages?
 
I think I do, but I don't know where they are. I certainly haven't scanned them onto my computer. Maybe in a few months time.
 
It's hard to believe that some zoos around the world still have almost identical cages for their primates. I visited the Emperor Valley Zoo in Trinidad and Tobago a month ago and took a photo that looks remarkably like the one above. At least Taronga went on to create some excellent exhibits, specifically the massive chimpanzee habitat.
